Protection against child abuse: new EU

EU Security Union Strategy and initiatives to fight child sexual abuse, drugs and firearms

In the fight against the sexual abuse of children, the Internet could be examined much more in the future. As can be seen from a draft law presented on Wednesday, providers such as Google or Facebook could be obliged to search their services using software for corresponding representations. In addition, an EU center is to be set up that should provide corresponding technology, among other things. "We will find you," said EU interior commissioner Ylva Johansson to offenders.

The network is currently flooded with appropriate representations and the problem is greater. According to the EU Commission, 85 million pictures and videos worldwide were reported to show children sexual abuse. The number of unreported cases is significantly higher. For 2021, the Internet Watch Foundation has determined an increase in reports on confirmed sexual child abuse by 64 percent compared to the previous year.

80 percent Swedish girls between 10 and 13 received nude pictures without being asked

The perpetrators are often people who trust the child, says Johansson. "And these crimes remain very often in the dark until the perpetrator publishes them online." Only the photos and videos often enabled law enforcement. The fact that the illustrations of severe sexual child abuse find their way into the net more and more is also due to the exchange culture of criminals. In order to get children's pornography from other perpetrators, it could be a prerequisite for transferring a rape of a child by livestream.
