NBA News, Playoffs: Referees provide explanation of the Green
In game 1, Draymond Green picked up a flagrant-2-foul against the Memphis Grizzlies, which ended the game for the Warriors star prematurely. After the game, the referees delivered their official justification, and Steve Kerr also commented on the scene.
The scene occurred shortly before half -time. Green was initially taken into account a normal foul when he pulled Grizzlies-Big-Man Brandon Clarke on the jersey. In the repetition, however, the referees realized that the Forward also hit the ball when trying the opponent hit his face. The referees decided on flagrant-2 and the big man was referred to the field.
Green could not understand the decision and made a big show out of his departure. Referee Kane Fitzgerald provided a reason for the decision of the referee team after the game: "Overall, contact was considered unnecessary and excessively, which leads to a flagrant foul and an expulsion," said Fitzgerald.
The referee went into even more detail: "Well, there are a few things," said Fitzgerald. "The first part was the arm movement and the significant contact with the face, and then pulling the jersey down and the throw on the floor with a player that is in the air, that makes it unnecessary and exaggerated."
Brandon Clarke: "He is known for that"
The foul, Brandon Clarke, found the referee's decision to be correct and was not very surprised at Green's campaign. "It is not shocking that he did that. He has done that in the past," said Clarke. "He is known in his career for flagrant fouls. I felt it felt like all my life on TV, so I wasn't really shocked."
"It was surprising," said Warriors coach Steve Kerr after the game. Curry meanwhile showed incomprehension: "It is a difficult decision, especially away. A series begins and a player like Draymond has to go to the changing room. Nobody wants to see that, it's not good for the game. I think that he doesn't deserve that Has."
The mother of the NBA star also spoke on Twitter: "I still can't believe the decision. He tried to do the right thing! Several NBA stars commented on the scene on social media, such as Damian Lillard: "We need more context with these rules." Javal McGee wrote: "In today's league: Flagrant 2... back then: a normal foul."
In the end it didn't matter for the dubs, they also turned the game in Memphis without their best defender and won with 117: 116. Game 2 of the series takes place in the night of Wednesday at 3.30 a.m. German time.
